New York City, every girl’s dream shopping destination. They take the idea of “shop til you drop” to the next level, partly because it is just so sprawling, but mainly because of the sheer number of incredible shops, boutiques, and malls. If you’re planning a girly weekend away and shopping is your main priority, look no further than NYC. But in a city that big, it’s easy to become overwhelmed, or even accidentally end up staying at the wrong end of the city. Here’s everything you need to know to plan the perfect shopping trip to the Big Apple.
Find a hotel in the thick of it
Getting a hotel which is a good price and in the right area can be a challenge, but there’s no harm in shopping around. You also need to decide if you’re happy travelling to the shops, or if you’d prefer to be able to roll out of your hotel and into Macy’s. Hotels around Broadway, 5th Ave, and Times Square are a bit pricier, but they guarantee you great shopping. If you’re happier to travel in, Hell’s Kitchen or Soho, still in Manhattan, get you a bit more bang for your buck, and you’re surrounded by cute boutiques and great little eateries.
Take comfortable shoes
The walking is intense. Even if you choose to get the subway or a cab between main shopping destinations, you’re still going to find that walking block to block between stores will take its toll on your feet. So don’t go for fashion over function, you’re not going to want to drop before you finish your shop.
Get the paperwork sorted
Unlike travelling through Europe, there’s a bit of paperwork that needs covering before they’ll allow you into the USA. This is called an ESTA, which acts as a visa waiver as long as you’re there for fewer than 90 days (and it’s tricky to shop for much longer than that). Just visit Official-esta.com and fill out the form there. Once that’s done, it’s a good idea to print off your itinerary to show border agents as you pass through for expediency’s sake, and you’re good to go.
Do your research
With the sheer number of shops and options available, you’re going to want to do your research. Even with a fortnight, you’ll struggle to hit every high-end shop, mall, boutique, and tourist attraction. With careful research, you can plan your trip out to make the most of your time.
Take an international card
When splashing the cash is the NYC, you’re not going to want to carry all of your available funds in cold, hard, paper dollars, purely for security’s sake. If you don’t trust yourself, a pre-paid card from someone like FairFX will stop you from blowing your budget. An international credit card will keep charges far lower than if you rely on your debit card.
There’s no better shopping than Macy’s and Bloomingdales, so make sure you plan carefully for the perfect trip.
